Ocean-farmedsalmon is oftenmarketed with premium sounding language, like “clean”, “sustainable”, “Arctic” and “organic,” and with references to pristine waters in exotic places like the Faroe Islands, Loch Duart, andeven New Zealand.1 In reality, all ocean-farmed salmon, no matter the label or location, relies on the same harmful practices that erode the health of wild ecosystems and marine life. In particular the endangered wild salmon who must swim inthe same bays, fjords, and lochs where most of thesefarms are placed.
Furthermore, farmed salmon is naturally grey. It's colored pink with astaxanthin, and 95% of the market uses a synthetic2 version derived from petrochemicals.3 Use of synthetic colorants is consistent across salmon farms worldwide.
